What To Expect

Modern Adventures are designed to showcase the best of a destination, and promote community, sharing and celebration. We thoughtfully curate all elements for an immersive, diverse experience—with plenty of free time to relax and soak in the atmosphere.

The French Alps Experience

Soaring cliffs, remote Alpine villages, luxurious mountain inns, and unparalleled opportunities for amazing photographyget ready for an unforgettable 9-day exploration of the French Alps with a group of passionate photographers.

This is a fully supported hike led by experienced local guides. We will be transported by vehicle to the hiking starting point each day, and at the end of the day’s hike to our lodge or hotel for the evening. Our nights are spent at elegant, comfortable lodges and hotels. We carry lightweight day packs, while the rest of our gear is transferred between accommodations.

This trek is accessible for most age levels who maintain good physical fitness, have previous hiking experience, and are prepared for the demands of hiking in remote areas. Each day we walk 6 to 8 hours, with elevation gains between 1,500 and 4,000 feet. We stick mostly to established trails, at times making use of off-piste routes.

This trip is intended for photographers of all levels. We will meet each night as a group to discuss and review the images we capture each day, to concept out shooting ideas and set-ups and how to best execute them. Each day we make time to shoot specific aspects of the French Alps experience: mountains and valleys, sunrise and sunset, wildlife and nature, using a variety of lenses, capturing movement, creating depth, and sharing tips for composing the best images we can.

How We Eat

We’ll have breakfast each morning, and gourmet picnic lunches on the trails, with group dinners most nights at village restaurants. You will have dinner on Day 4 at your leisure, to dine on your own in the village of Barcelonnette.

Alcohol may be available for purchase at dinner which you are welcome to purchase at your own expense.

Special Dietary Needs

Traveling with dietary restrictions or allergies can be a challenge, but we’re here to help. Prior to your departure, we’ll send you a questionnaire where you can inform us of any special dietary needs you have. Depending on the information you give us, we will work with our Alaska partners to adjust menus and be aware of allergies and restrictions on our trip. We kindly request that any changes to our menu are based on need rather than preference, as we work very hard to curate an exceptional dining experience that is difficult to change.

Traveling as a Group

We believe group travel is an intimate, empowering and fun way to learn about yourself and others. Like any good relationship, it thrives with respect. We ask that every guest honors the key times in a day to ensure everyone's experience is the absolute best is can be. This is everyone's adventure!

This adventure will be limited to no more than 12 fellow adventurers and your Modern Adventure team. We will be joined by expert expedition guides, each highly qualified in all necessary skills to safely travel through the French Alps. They will be with us for the entirety of the adventure helping us carry group supplies and helping us to have the true Alps experience.
